What Taichi means to me

Taichi chuan is a very popular exercise in China and in many other countries. A thousand year old secret practice that was handed down to the members of the same family or trusted students. Since the last century it has been made public and has become a widespread activity which significantly improves the psychophysical state of those who practice it.

"What is Taichi? It comes from the Wuji. It is the mother of Yin and Yang. When it moves, it divides. At rest it reunites". So Wang Zongyue describes Taichi chuan in his Taichichuan Classics. At its origins, after its creation, the universe was vague and indistinct. There were no limits, differences or separations. This state is the Wuji. Gradually the energy of creation was divided into two extremities, the Yin and the Yang. This polarity is called Taichi and is the cause of other separations and mutations

The standing position, immobile, with the weight distributed on the legs, relaxed, without intention, before starting the sequence, this is the state of Wuji. As soon as the intention to start the movement develops, one moves to a state of Taichi; the movement from one foot to the other, the modification, the deviation of a movement is possible only after having started it. The initial movement makes all other movements possible. Each part of the body becomes alternately full and empty.

The modern approach is gradually leveling this polarity of Taichi, martial art and meditative practice, by losing sight of its basic principles and deeper aspects.
